Carlsbad Caverns…..gorgeous! But the trip there was “out of this world”!

We had about a 9 hour drive from Santa Fe to Carlsbad….and I have to say that it seemed even longer as the scenery really didn’t change the entire time. It is desert and it all looks the same. There was certainly one major diversion along the way and that was going through Roswell, New Mexico. Their claim to fame is the number of alien abductions so the recurring theme was aliens and space ships. As I said, it was a diversion from the desert.

If you have never gone to any of the national parks featuring caves, I highly recommend Carlsbad Caverns. Wow! These caves have a beauty all their own. The walking path in “the big room” (the largest accessible chamber in North America) was an easy hike and it was mostly wheelchair accessible, so Marj was able to enjoy the caves as well. We went down 750 feet in less than a minute and walked into a cool constant 56 degrees. We rented a handheld audible tour guide for only $5 so we were able to learn lots of interesting facts along the way. For instance, the chihuahua desert was right above us which sits in the Guadalupe Mountain Range. More than 440,000 people visit this cave annually.

Unbelievable, right? So that’s what was below……this is what was on top.

From Carlsbad, we’re continuing southwest and hope to be in Boerne, Texas next. Boerne is right outside of San Antonio, so our plan is to see the Alamo and The San Antonio River Walk. This is a fitting place to wish you all “Happy Trails”!!!
