You’ve Gotta Love New Orleans! Muffulettas and Beignets…..spells NOLA!

I used to think that I would not care for New Orleans…but this is going to be my THIRD time visiting this unique and wonderful city. It is filled with interesting characters and the food is WONDERFUL! When visiting, there are just some things you HAVE to experience. One is Central Groceries famous creation, the Muffuletta sandwich. This sandwich is made with a crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside bun, filled with salami, ham and cheese along with a chopped olive spread. It’s huge and tastes amazing. Then for dessert, you must try one (or six) of the well known beignets from Cafe du Monde. A beignet is a little square of dough, fried and COVERED with powdered sugar…..so, so good! But, the absolute best is Willie Mae’s Scotch House where you can get the best fried chicken EVER along with all the soul food ‘sides’ you can imagine! It’s not a fancy place but you definitely know you’re in the heart of New Orleans.

As soon as we arrived and got set up, we headed for Willie Mae’s for some good ole’ down south soul food. We got there around 3 pm and there were no lines – apparently a great time to get there! We were NOT disappointed!

Our first full day here was a gorgeous, sunny day. But Howie had to work so when he’s done, we’re heading to the Central Grocery for a muffuletta.

You’ve GOTTA have a Muffuletta!

And then you move across the street and down a block or so to Cafe du Monde!

So once you’ve consumed THAT many calories, it’s time to shop and sit in the park for a spell. The park is quite interesting as there are street acts, vendors and PEOPLE to watch! It can be quite educational! Unfortunately, the park was CLOSED due to an increase in Covid cases.

The architecture here is something you just can not ignore. From the wrought iron to all the ginger breading on the quaint homes – it’s all unique and fun to see. It all screams New Orleans!

If you know football, you know that New Orleans is home to the Superdome! Of course, we had to get a close up and personal look at this famous stadium!

Today we kicked around the idea of participating in a plantation or swamp tour but in the end we all agreed to just “chill”! We got some necessary things done around the “house” like fixing the shower drain, replacing a defunct computer battery and I’m happy to say that I went through the entire motorhome, weeding through and boxing up all the “extra and unnecessary” stuff! The plan is when we get home, we’ll just carry in all the packed boxes, leaving only the essential items in the motorhome. It’s just like home…..before you know it, you’re space is filled with all the “treasures” we tend to collect along the way. It feels good to have that done.

So after the work, Larry, Howie and I went to the pool for a quick dip. It wasn’t heated and was actually pretty cool, but it was certainly refreshing!

Tomorrow, we are on the move again. This time, we’re heading for Destin, Florida. It’s hard to believe that our journey is coming to an end. Wasn’t it just yesterday that we jumped in Junebug, all excited about our almost 4 month trip out west? But, we’re not done yet! We’re looking forward to Destin – it will be good to see the Gulf again! Until then………… Happy Trails!
