Yellowstone…..Day 2

Okay….I just can’t help myself. I’m going to start with my very favorite video of the day, maybe the entire journey so far!

By far, we saw more bison than any other animal. We saw quite a few animals the second day, but still no moose or bear. We were okay with that as we saw elk, eagle, trumpeter swan, bison, wolves, and sand hill cranes.

You have to look really hard but those white dots in the lake really are trumpeter swan!

We actually did do more that day than look for wildlife. Howie and I stepped out of our comfort zone and did quite a bit of hiking. We really wanted to see Grand Prism but found the “short” walking route did not afford a great prismatic view as you stood right next to the spring. We realized the best view would be aerial. So we set off for the trail to take us higher.

Little did we realize it was a two mile hike with the last 200 feet practically straight up – but we did it! (No small feat for two out of shape seniors!) It was worth the effort even though it was overcast and the prism colors were not as vivid as on a sunny day – all in all, it was beautiful! Here are pictures, the first showing the hiking trail.

Another area we visited which required a lot of hiking, especially up numerous stairs, was Mammoth Hot Springs. (near the Northern Entrance) This is an area of living water as the minerals in the water are depositing and changing the landscape continuously.

Yet another area of the park that we saw that day was Steamboat Geyser. This geyser is not regular nor frequent with it’s eruptions. However, we happened to be there at the right time. The first pics are of Steamboat and others are from that immediate area.

Lake Yellowstone….this lake is huge and very beautiful. It’s located in the southern area of the park.

Yellowstone is a huge park – 3,471 square miles. It is situated in the northwestern part of Wyoming with parts in Montana and Idaho. It has five entrances. The geology is very diverse with surprises around every turn. Here are more pictures of the many faces of Yellowstone National Park. If you have never been there, it’s certainly worth putting on your bucket list.
